Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Man City Speculation as Pure Rumour

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh talk connecting him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.

The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant in Manchester, responded to the persistent rumours about his future.

Maresca, named Chelsea boss in June 2024, is under contract running until 2029, with a potential extra year available.

"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."

He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I said many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is not true."

Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the top flight, are set to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a lunchtime fixture.

Tensions Following Previous Remarks

Maresca's most recent statement come in the wake of he referred to a previous 48-hour period as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.

Those original remarks had fueled considerable speculation of a potential rift between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.

When pressed if he had since spoken with the club's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about various topics. But about the Everton press conference, no."

The Italian however affirmed he would definitely stay at the club for the coming campaign and urged supporters to keep backing the team".

In more positive news, Maresca indicated that sidelined forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a match against Aston Villa later this month.

Perspective: An 'Open Wound'

The apparent disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an open wound that still cause concern.

While there has been no further escalation of the situation publicly, there has equally been no apology forthcoming, creating the matter unaddressed.

The mood during the manager's media briefings has grown notably awkward, raising fears it could undermine what has otherwise been a promising start to the season.

Chelsea's on-field position is strong: they are fourth in the Premier League, have reached the League Cup last four, and can secure a better European position with strong performances in their remaining matches.

The prevailing question is whether this off-field dynamic might eventually disrupt a squad that was just starting to look settled.
