Emerging Foreign Policy Vision Points to Europe's Fundamental Problem: An Alleged Shortfall of Racism?

During his first term, commentators frequently advised that the former president's remarks should be taken seriously rather than literally. Yet, subsequent events indicate that that formula may have reversed the logic.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy alongside a series of statements from U.S. figures, Trump proxies, and Trump himself have precipitated potentially one of the most profound crises for transatlantic unity, the security framework that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since World War II.

From Financial Contributions to Cultural Anxiety

Whereas Trump's earlier complaint focused on Europe's perceived refusal to pay for its own security, his rhetoric has now evolved into a far more alarming outlook.

Tinged with racism and a deep-seated contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has spoken about the risk of societal collapse on a continent he barely knows and has predominantly seen from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

"His recent interview devoid of a consistent philosophy is instead full of another element: the muddled anxiety of an older man facing demographic shifts."

This paranoid worldview, which has already influenced harsh American border and law enforcement approaches, now appears to be shaping the administration's prism of Europe.

The Racist Core

From this vantage point, migration from the global south causes a weakening of European societies, rendering them "weak" under "stupid" leadership and setting the stage for their eventual decline. It constitutes an openly xenophobic ideology, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing far-right movements across Europe.

Although the general thrust of Trump's racial rhetoric is familiar, its specific implications for European security are essential to grasp.

For Trump and his adherents—including tech magnate Elon Musk, who has called for the breakup of the European Union—all politics is inherently transactional. However, whereas the previous argument was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a decadent Europe is undeserving due to its shift toward multiculturalism.

Weakening from Within

During the conversation, Trump himself connects these ideas in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He concedes that Russia's Vladimir Putin desires a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe is weak, and by publicly highlighting the fissures in the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European cohesion—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is unfolding at possibly the most critical moment for Europe since WWII, amid a brutal conflict in Ukraine and rising provocations elsewhere on the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv facing persistent threats of American abandonment, the peril is that Trump has constructed a justifying narrative for ignoring European leaders.

The European Response

This situation requires a firm response from capitals across Europe. While some leaders, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been blunt in their rebuttals, others—like the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer—have opted for a policy of attempting to appease the U.S. administration.

On Tuesday, a Downing Street spokesperson declined to criticize the president's remarks about Europe or his latest criticism on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

They said, "The Prime Minister enjoys a strong relationship with the American leader and a good working relationship with the London mayor, and is focused on cooperating with each to achieve better outcomes for the people."

The undeniable truth is that the president intends what he says and repeats what he means consistently. The time has come to stop pretending otherwise.
