The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
