An intense cold spell has seized an intense and prolonged cold spell, with thermometers lingering between -20C and -40C for an extended duration. On Tuesday, Braeburn in the Yukon recorded -55.7C, representing its most frigid December day in nearly five decades.
In addition, the locales of Mayo and Dawson suffered through over two straight weeks of nights below -40C, with the temperature in Mayo bottoming out at -50.4 degrees Celsius on Monday. Whitehorse similarly reported 10 nights when readings fell to minus 30 degrees or lower.
The deep freeze spread farther south over the festive period. In Edmonton, the Christmas overnight low dipped under -28 degrees Celsius.
December 26th was anticipated to usher in readings no higher than -20 Celsius through a wide swath, encompassing cities from Edmonton to Quebec.
The severe cold is forecast to persist through the start of January. There are warnings of possible electrical grid strain in Yukon territory over the next several days, as the system endures record-high pressure from peak power usage levels.
This extended freeze is the result of the polar vortex remaining anchored over Canada for much of December, which funnels frigid northern air southward. In the coming week, forecasts indicate this cold air will pull back northward slowly, permitting warmer Pacific winds to flow over America and reach into portions of southern Canada.
In stark contrast, parts of the US experienced the hottest December 25th in their history as the mercury climbed roughly 15 to 30 degrees above typical averages. For numerous locations, the weather resembled a spring day in April or May rather than the end of December.
Multiple states established new Christmas temperature highs. The capital of Oklahoma soared to 25C on Christmas Day, exceeding the old record of 22C from 1982. Urban centers like Austin, Dallas, and Charlotte, North Carolina similarly saw thermometers rise past the 25C mark.
Warmer-than-normal conditions are forecast to last on December 26th and into the weekend, with abnormal warmth projected to move into the south-eastern states later in the week.
The warmth has been fuelled by a strong upper-level ridge reaching from the arid southwest across the continent, which generates a heat-dome phenomenon. This setup creates an extensive zone of high atmospheric pressure over a large portion of North America, trapping warm air near the surface. As air sinks through the atmosphere, it compresses and heats further, allowing unusually warm temperatures to build.
