No fewer than 16 lives were killed and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.
Below are the victims who are known to date.
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
