As confusing as it is to witness the president seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into an icon of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
